Among the bajillion other things that impressed me at the awesomely impressive Forbidden City was this cypress tree. It had been hacked as a young tree to grow into the Chinese character for ren, meaning person.



The cypress tree is really remarkable. It lends itself to manipulation and mutilation to our whims.
