On Myles' itenerary
When we asked Myles what he thought he might want to see in Beijing, his first two answers were, "Bird's Nest Stadium" and "Changcheng." Changcheng would be The Great Wall.
After dinner Friday we stopped at the Bird's Nest. Until the Olympics it is completely off-limits behind this fence. Little did we know, too, that while we were taking our pictures, the top secret first dress rehearsal for the opening ceremony was taking place.
And we sort-of saw the Water Cube
From these pictures it is impossible to tell, but there were hundreds of people lined up along the fence trying to take pictures.
We were able to take a somewhat rushed trip to the Great Wall. Our time was so severely limited, so we opted not to go to the more touristy and more famous Badaling and chose instead to stop at Juyongguan, a section of the Wall most people pass on their way to Badaling from Beijing.
We still had remarkably blue skies.
Probably because this is a far less popular Great Wall site than others, some sort of Olympic thing was being filmed for televisions. We could hear the beating of drums and could see some of the crowd gathered around the drumming, but we were prevented from seeing much else there.
What we were able to watch, though, was the unfurling of a banner that ended up stretching as far as we could see in any direction along the wall. It was made up of alternating the Beijing Olympics logo, the flag for the PRC and flags for all the participant countries.
