Like living on vacation
So often foreigners and Chinese people alike ask us why we don't live in Shekou anymore, or if we miss living in Shekou. It's hard to express to foreigners without sounding insulting ("Shekou wasn't a good environment for our family") or to Chinese people without sounding like we are lying ("Shekou is out of our price range").
However, now that it is sunny again and we are at one of the pools almost daily, our current answer is more like "Living out there is like living on vacation."
Our apartment hunt is back on. Our landlord has asked us to leave at the lease's end so she can focus on selling the property. We wish her luck because the real estate market is absolutely ridiculous here. She has constantly tried to offer us a "great" price for us to buy it, but I really cannot get my head around spending more than 2,000,000 RMB (almost US$300,000) for a two-bedroom apartment in China. And I still cannot understand what she was thinking when she tried to pressure us into a one-year lease.
We are still focusing on finding a new apartment in our same garden that we are in. Last week we looked at six apartments just within our phase, with another one booked tomorrow. Friday afternoon there will be more. Not fun. I hope this doesn't become a biannual ritual.
