Days of Mourning
This afternoon Myles and I were at Jusco, grocery shopping. I had just that morning read in the SCMP.com about the days of mourning in China, but somehow had forgotten about the moments of silence scheduled for this afternoon (also sometimes referred to as a time of "wail of grief" to describe the car horns, sirens, and other cacophony that makes the moment of silence, not). In the store I heard some sort of announcement which I thought was for some sort of J-Card special in aisle something or other (yeah, Mandarin lessons are really paying off). The muzak shut off. Then I saw most of the other shoppers frozen in their tracks, eyes cast downward. It took me a few seconds, and a glance at the time on my phone, and I remembered. I explained to Myles, who was a little freaked out by all the shoppers and employees in the dairy section standing like statues, that everyone was taking a moment to, um, pray for the people in Sichuan.
Immediately he dropped to his knees and started, "Yin Fu, ji Zhi, ji Sheng Shen zhi ming. A men." I joined him on the floor, and he extemporized a prayer, mostly words from the Our Father.

PS Glad to hear from you again.
great compassion mantra 'Namo Kuan Yin Pu Sa'
meaning I take refuge in the light of Kuan Yin
or mantra of universal protection:
'Om Mani Padme Hum'
meaning Hail the Jewel -or pearl- in the Lotus
there's certainly some credence in the hypothesis (the first resembles parts of St Bernard of Clairvaux's Memorare -- which is predated by a more succinct prayer of the third century AD, the Sub Tuum which is mysteriously even more similar --:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub_tuum_praesidium
and the pearl metaphor sounds uncannily like a transliteration of the Ave Maria greeting of scripture:
blessed is the fruit of thy womb
Some depictions of the feminine holy person include a serpent, evoking the woman clothed with the sun of the Book of Revelations. The apocalyptic scenes of the earthquake region (along the Longmen Shan fault, aka Dragon Gate Mountains) should not have us fear end-times scenarios, but rather pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Sheshan on her feast day May 25th for the conversion of China that she may join the Civilization of Love being built in the hearts of the faithful!

include my prayers from here too.
