Slip slide and away
Yesterday Myles and I were joined by two of friends to enjoy some great South China recreation---ice skating.
Yes, you read that correctly. In high-end shopping malls all over Hong Kong and Shenzhen, ice skating rinks are as essential as movie theaters. They are, of course, indoors.
When we arrived at the rink, half of it was taken up by some sort of hockey practice. "The Canadians are here!" Myles yelled.

It was so great to see the Maple Leafs and Calagary Flames jerseys. No Penguins, but one was wearing the a Team China hockey jersey.
How funny is it that Myles' first ice skating experience took place in tropical Shenzhen and his first teachers were one of my friends from Indonesia and another from Jiangxi province.

Myles did pretty well for his first outing. I was a nervous wreck because the last time I went ice skating was 20 years ago and I ended up spending the night in the emergency room with a concussion. Myles kept insisting he could skate fast. I tried to remind him to start slowly, but he countered that with, "But I have to skate fast. That is what God made me for."
How much am I rethinking this old post where I said that our move to China will kill any interest he might have in hockey?
And the rink-closing treat for Myles was getting to watch the Zamboni-like vehicle clean the ice.

and waaaay back in the 70s, some of you might (or might not) remember that Monroeville Mall used to have an indoor ice rink as well...I used to go down there on weekends with some friends I made thru the youth folk group from my church...lots of fun! (and yes I said FOLK group- we sang a lot of Godspell songs at the youth mass..and I learned to play guitar so it wasn't all bad )....anyhow, I remember loving those trips and feeling quite important as I was only 12,13 and I was going with kids who were in HIGH SCHOOL-->the only kids who could drive that my parents trusted me to go anywhere with..oh yeah the old days....
i literally LOL'd at his canadians remark. that's too cute.
