Super Bowl watching in China
I was hoping that my intro image could have been like this, but with the Super Bowl and not the NFC championship game. I love the chinese lantern casting a shadow over the image, but someone at the bar took it down for the Super Bowl. And I almost had my metaphors worked out.
On this great American Holiday, our family rose before dawn to gear up and make the pilgrimage in the cold to the sports bar in Shekou.
That was my attempt with the poetic language for the memoir to make this sound more magical and less alcohol-infused than it was. We did get to the sports bar in time for kickoff. The bar was filled with Americans in their favorite football jerseys....not just Patriots or Giants fans
but even people in Redskins, colts, and, yes, Steelers jerseys.
For the record, Myles was not wearing one of his FIVE Roethlisberger jerseys. We were both in Steelers socks, though.
We were treated to a 48 RMB all-you-can-eat greasy breakfast buffet.
Half-time came. Totally didn't see that score coming. Did you?
But what is a Super Bowl blog post without discussion of the commercials? If I had to pick my favorite one, it would have to be the one for Alaska powdered milk.
What? You didn't see the Alaska powdered milk ad? You missed a really great advertisement, in Tagolog and English about this powdered milk subsitute for kids to build strong bones. Oh yeah, only we got to see that ad because we were watching the game on satellite TV out of the Phillipines. The only ads that run at all during the game were for the powdered milk, JVC, and the PGA tour that is carried by this same sports channel. We did not get any of the commercials that are up for debate where you are. It was a little funny to me to consider the difference between the commercials on this sports channel and the Cartoon Network we used to get at the old apartment out of the Philipines also. There was a lot more cleavage on the cartoon network than the Super Bowl.
