On Tuesday Night we were invited for a pre-Chinese New Year Eve casual dinner and Mass. The new priest for St. Anthony Church, Futian, was there, as well as the two young nuns who serve that parish. After dinner about forty people or so crowded into the house for confession, rosary, and Mass.
At dinner my friends' mother made sure my cup was never empty of their homemade mi jiu.
It was so thick and syrupy. In their hometown near Shantou in the eastern part of Guangdong province, this is referred to as Lady's Mijiu. It is often given to women right after they've given birth. It is also great for festive occassions.
Another treat their mother made is this sweet dish, the Mandarin name for which they weren't certain, and the Cantonese name I did not write down. It is a Shantou variation on a common dish made for New Year's.
This is a sweet, sticky soup made with dates, lotus roots, and mushrooms. I showed this to my Chinese teacher the next day, and she, being from the north, was surprised at the mushrooms.
