Shanghai today
I have to make this brief because, you know, the internet is not free.
We went to the Shanghai Aquarium which is absolutely amazing. I'll have more details later, with pictures, but the aquarium itself is just outstanding. It had lots of fish and sea creatures to keep Myles happy and so much educational information in English that kept Randy completely absorbed at times. I made an unplanned impulse buy last week in Shenzhen of a new digital camera. I wasn't in need of a new one, necessarily, because I really do like using a camera that has to be held together with scotch tape. However, when I saw that this camera had an aquarium setting, I absolutely had to get it. And then I found out it had two taking-pictures-of-fish settings. Whoo hoo.
One weird (to me, that is) thing, though, about the Shanghai aquarium was the gift shop. It was no surprise to us that the only way to exit the facility was through the gift shop. We were hoping to buy some cool souvies of the hat and t-shirt variety anyway. However, in this huge gift shop there were almost nothing that bore the words "Shanghai" and/or "Aquarium" in any language. There were a few magnets and keychains that said it in English but no t-shirts or any other type of usual souvenir. It wasn't that the shop was small. It was actually quite large, but was full of independent vendors selling the usual stuff you can buy anywhere. Legos, light-up junkie toys, spinning things, stuffed animals, jewelry. There was a t-shirt vendor, but she just did regular silkscreens, and none of them said "Shanghai" or "Aquarium" in any language. We were able to find something small that Myles got for Crispian and Collin that does actually say Shanghai Aquarium in Chinese and English, but it was the only thing of its kind.
So that is really just about all we did today. The aquarium was hours of fun, without our noticing at all that we had been there that long. The typhoon....not so fun. But hopefully that will soon pass. I'd like to walk around all those famous walk-around places, like the Bund, the French Concession.
And for tomorrow, rain or no, Myles is begging to go to the Shanghai Musuem. Totally begging.
