Advice, please

While I am asleep and you are awake reading this, my American readers, can you please tell me how best to go about applying frosting to a cake? It will be a 9 X 9 inch cake for Myles birthday party Friday night. Or maybe 2, when i finish baking and realize that my cake is too small. Ok, that is another question.....I have 8 kids and the same number of adults coming.....9 X 9 is too small, isn't it? What if I make a pie, too? Or two cakes.......
So, if you can let me know by tomorrow morning, your Thursday evening, I'll know how to proceed.

Jen yes that cake is to small. It is always better to have to much than not enough. I would make another cake that way there would be no fight on who wants what. They all can have the same thing less problems i would think. Also what kind of frosting is it? Is it homemade? or store bought? Homemade you should frost it right away. If store bought whenever. Homemade seems to harden quicker and then in turn makes it harder to frost. Just take a spatula and spread it on. Make sure not to skimp on it your could tear the cake. the thicker the better. but not to thick. about an half inch thick is good. hope this helped.

Good advice from Ashley, and I can add that when you are actually frosting the cake, keep a glass of HOT WATER next to you (one that is tall enough for the spreader to fit into, if you are using a knife like most of us) When you are spreading the frosting, dip the knife in the water (yes, it gets ucky) it will help spread the frosting.

And yes, I agree, 1 9x9 isn't enough. But instead of two, how about cookies for the adults, and let the kids enjoy the cake? Just a thought!

I agree with all of the above that you will need at least two cakes. Depending on what else you will be serving I might also consider adding the pie . It also sounds like you have already been given the best frosting tips but I will add that if you don't have a spatula or spreader a butter knife will also work well. Happy Birthday to Myles.
