I forgot to mention because I was wrapped up in all the build-up to the Pope's letter that last week I was reading the print-edition of the South China Morning Post at Starbucks. I was flipping through the sports section and I saw a huge picture of Jose Castillo making some sort of acrobatic diving catch. I was excited, and then I read the blurb under the photo. The caption noted that despite that great defensive effort, the Pirates lost the game and were on track for their 15th consecutive losing season. Do you hear that McClatchey? Your team was noteworthy in the international press because of how spectacular and near-legendary your losing-ness.
However, I still miss Pirates games. Pierogies. Nachos 'n 'at. I don't care about winning or losing, but it would be nice to think that a win might be possible when you go to the game.

That's ok, the headline in last Sunday's Philadelphia Enquirer was the Phillies nearing the 10,000 loss mark.
For those like me who are arithmetically challenged, that's an average of 100 losses a year for 100 years. They only play 160 games these days, less than that earlier in the last century.
