No mention

As far as I could tell, there was no mention of the Pope's letter this morning at Mass in Nantou. The homily was shorter than normal. But then again, there is another Mass this afternoon, in honor of St. Paul. I'll have more after that Mass, probably more about the celebration than the letter.
It is a beautiful document, though, isn't it?

It is a beautiful document, and I'd like to think it will get a suitable amount of publicity both within and outside China. But as the Pope said, even where bishops have had their position regularised by the Vatican, this hasn't been publicised, and often even their congregations knew nothing about it - in fact, I have experience of the fact that many Westerners supposedly working for the Church in China deliberately tried to ensure that this message was suppressed, as it didn't fit in with their own agenda. I don't hold out much hope for Chinese Catholics to hear this message in church - I hope the message will filter through via the internet.

I also don't know if my experience here is typical throughout China because we are without a bishop in Guangzhou (Canton) diocese. Fr. Gan, who was approved by the Vatican has not been installed yet. In other places in the world, the bishop would be the one to encourage the priests.

You know, Clare, what is a odd is that the letter itself is not blocked here in China, in any language. I think what is at work with the websites run by official church folks is not as much censorship as it is a refusal to appear in endorsement. I could be wrong, but it is possible to access the letter from any of a number of sources.
That being said, I am interested to hear more from some of my friends at that parish that speak English and are always making sure I understand what is going on there. Unfortunately, none of them happened to be at Mass on sunday.
