Foot massage
About once a month or two I treat myself to a foot massage. I don't do the works, but I do get a hot bath for my feet of milk and flowers and a pretty intense arm and neck massage with wood oil. The whole thing sets me back about 50 RMB and a little more than an hour. I feel fantastic for days afterward, especially if I get Number 83 who pretty much beats me about the neck and shoulder region.
Of course, I have no nanny, so many ask me what I do with Myles when I go get a massage. Funny you should ask, I point out to anyone that doesn't realize this. All of the massage rooms are equipped with cable TV, and at 4 o'clock every weekday afternoon, two of the Hong Kong channels we get show English-language programming for kids. Sometimes it is Sesame Street, sometimes Thomas the Tank Engine, sometimes Bob the Builder. There are some other shows from Canada, the UK, and Australia as well. For Myles, this is a great treat. He gets to sit in air conditioning with all the watermelon we can eat and watch TV. When it is Sesame Street I really feel justified, because that's educational, you know.
I can't be the only mom who has thought of this, but I am the only one I know here that does this.
Anytime we walk past the foot massage place Myles tells me that he thinks I need a massage. He even says it with a tone and look that communicates that he believes I really deserve such a treat. I fall completely in love with how much he is considering how I might feel at that momen. But then I look at the time, and tell him that at that, while I might enjoy a massage right then, there isn't anything on TV he likes. His response?
"Oh, okay. Never mind."
