When in Rome, D-I-Y

The other evening as we were out eating at the local Shandong restaurant, I was reminded of the intense debate on Sinosplice blog recently about whether one should throw out their own garbage at Starbucks. I can't help but contrast this discussion with our usual experience of having to wash our own dishes and chopsticks at most Chinese restaurants we go to. I understand that this is primarily a South China thing, but still....
Pick up after yourself at Starbucks? Strange and foreign. Wash your own chopsticks and tea cup? Just fitting in with the locals.
