Same City

Tuesday as I was sipping an Iced Mocha in the largest Starbucks I have ever been, under a more-than-three story high Gucci billboard, I couldn't help but think that at that moment Randy and I were in the same city but decades apart.
Myles and I found ourselves in the MixC Mall, accidentally. We had wondered out the wrong exit from the Da Ju Yuan subway stop to go to Jusco, but suddenly we were at the MixC. I had been wanting to find this Mall anyway, mostly because I have read that it has a grocery store with a lot of imported items. We found it, a store called Ole, that looks more like Whole Foods or the fanciest newest Wegman's you've seen than a Chinese grocery store. I spent about 400 RMB here on Jelly Bellies, quinoa, and millet.

It is places like this that cause guidebooks to say that Shenzhen is indistinguishable from Hong Kong. Actually, from the MixC it even looks a little nicer. I found this flickr stream of this mall; I have no idea whose it is, but there are some pictures of this mall, including the Giant Gucci.
So in this same Shenzhen with the Gucci and Mochas and the beginnings of high-priced organic produce, is the Shenzhen where Randy works everyday. Industrial Bao'an, with its only recently paved streets, and stray chickens, real chickens, wandering in the traffic and vehicles like this, affectionately called by one of Randy's coworkers the Fuyong Ferrari

Same city.
