Faking it?

The other day at a bus stop I was making small talk with a young girl who helped me read the schedule. I admired her cross necklace, and told her so. She asked me if I were a Christian, showing me the image of Jesus she had as the screensaver on her cell phone. I told her that we were. I asked her then where she attended church. She told me that she used to go somewhere but didn't any longer. Someone had told her that the church was controlled by the government, so she figured it must be fake. Since she hadn't heard of the Nantou church I figured that she must have attended one of the Protestant Churches in Shenzhen. Before I could pursue this further, her bus arrived.
I felt so awful for this girl. It was so obvious that she wanted Jesus in her life and yet.....are we doing anyone any good when we in the West question the "official" Christian churches in China? Again, I am not saying that the situation is perfect, or even great, with the Church in China. But like I observed last week, would a priest who was faking it have freaked out over someone's improper? illicit? reception of communion? Would he?
