Circus freak

On one street in Shui Wan Tou, one called in English Shekou Walking Street, there are many, many, many clothing and shoe stores. The sales girls usually hang outside of the shoe stores in particular and try to entice you to buy shoes. I know from experience that 99% of the time they will not have anything in my size, so I usually just tell them Bu Yao and walk on. One girl was particularly persistent so I thought I would go in and mess with her head. I pointed at a few shoes, telling her I liked them, and that I needed then in a size 42. Her eyes grew so very large with disbelief. As she looked down to my no-doubt-about-it size 42 feet, I saw that look of curiosity crossed with horror. Here in a city of grotesquely deformed beggars on the street, I could tell I was the biggest freak she had seen all week.
When I tried to do that again in another store a few doors down, I was not quite so successful in scoring more freak points. I did, however, score a pair of (probably fake) Puma ballet-flat style sneakers. I got them for 50 RMB. I tried to get them for 40, but the sales girl in quite good English laughed, "Yeah, not in your size."
