Greetings from the Outer Banks!
Well, here we are in Kill Devil Hills (to answer La Familia Balducci), trying to enjoy what could be our last summer in my aunt's house. She has put her house on the market, and so much of what made her home her home has been put away. The walls once full of family pictures are bare--really they are naked. I know; a prospective buyer needs to be able to imagine their own things in the house. But it feels so eerie.
I was hoping to blog some beach pictures, you know, to show (off) all the fun we are having in the sun and the sand. Unfortunately, this holiday week hasn't gone exactly as planned. Monday I spent in the emergency room after Myles suffered his first febrile seizure, the first I had ever seen. It was the scariest morning of my life. Worse yet was that Crispian had to witness it, the whole thing including the terrifying ride to the hospital. Kate had just left the house to get tylenol for Myles' then low-grade fever because we couldn't find the one we packed. Not too long after that his fever skyrocketed, and he had his seizure. Another sister, Megs, was here and drove us to the hospital in Nags Head. Once we got to the emergency room they were able to get his temperature down pretty quickly. For some time after that he alternated between spacy and sleepy. They kept him most of the day to watch his progress, particularly since we recently were out of the country. Oh yes, avian flu was quickly ruled out, but other tropical diseases were of concern, though really not considered likely. By dinner time we were home and he was talking, demading cheese and cookies but tolerating his two-popcicle dinner. He's getting better, with occassional fevers that are promptly taken care of, but so far it is better for him to stay off the beach. This is not making him happy. Maybe tomorrow with some cooler weather coming we might be able to get him out there.
So that's what we've been doing on our summer "vacation." Don't you just envy us now?

Every year when we pass the Hospital in Nag's Head, I say a little prayer that we don't have to visit it that week. I'm so sorry to hear of your trip. I'm glad Myle's is on the mend.
If it's any consolation; iff you don't injure yourself in the process, seizures won't hurt.
