Express Lane

Saturday evening after Mass we stopped at the Food Lion in KDH for milk and hotdog buns. Since this was allI had, of course I queued up for one of the Express registers. Many of the other aisles and registers were filled with newly arrived people with overflowing carts of chips and cold cereal. Some vacationers must believe that they can only make one trip to the grocery store the entire week that they are there.
I love the express lane, though. It is fascinating what few purchases are deemed to be essential, that cause people to leave the comfort of their home or beach party to get one or two things. I noticed one family buying tortilla chips and soda, with some family members joining them mid-check-out with more chips. The 60-ish man immediately behind me only had coffee filters. I can't imagine how that conversation must have gone that he had to run to Food Lion at 6:30 in the evening for coffee filters. And the two very tan young men in front of me, with Edenton accents and firemen tatoos on their calves, bought $6 worth of limes. A margarita emergency, no doubt.
