Waiting for the Typhoon
According to CNN Hong Kong will be hit with the Typhoon Thursday, though the storms could be here by tomorrow night. Just today we woke up to bright sunshine, only to have it cloudy and windy by 11 am.
Shenzhen hasn't been hit by a Typhoon in seventeen years. Seventeen years! Just living in various parts of Pennsylvania in the past seventeen years I've experienced two or three hurricanes. I asked Randy if he had heard about anything about how we should prepare. Of course his answers are along the lines of "Batten down the hatches." So helpful.
One of the things that really concerns me is that seventeen years ago, Shenzhen maybe had a population of 50,000. Today it is closer to 8 million. Everything is newly built and not much tested by Mother Nature. Everywhere you look there is construction.
This isn't the best picture, and you can probably tell I took it out the rear window of a cab. One thing that is particularly striking about the new buildings going up is how shabby they look. The scaffolding is rickety-looking bamboo, and there is green meshy tarp draped over it. One of the guys working with Randy that is from the US temporarily asked if they were tearing things down or putting things up. He is right; it looks more like demolition than construction. However, under that comes shiny new building after shiny new building.
And, particularly for Denis, Shenzhen has its own Big Dig.
So tomorrow morning I'm off to the store, hopefully not all the way to War-Mah, to stock up on diapers and wipes, water, milk, and hopefully, flashlights.
This is part of a new connection between Hong Kong and Shenzhen that will allow express traffic to go beneath the city rather than end up in local traffic.
