The last straw
I know I should have been bothered by the whole Happy Holidays thing over Christmas. I have to confess, though, that I have been a Happy Holiday wisher for a long time, if only for the economy of expression.
HOWEVER, the other day when I was in Giant Eagle I saw some holiday favors that made me nearly kick over the display.
"HAPPY SHAMROCK DAY!" was the blithely green greeting on the plates and napkins.
Whattheheckhuh?
No, I am not saying St. Patrick's Day is even close to Christmas in importance. No where near. However, at least with St. Valentine's Day his name is retained if not his distinction even when they are marketing cheap crap in the shape of a heart. But taking this holiday of deep importance to Irish Catholics and making it a celebration of little green leafy things?
COME ON.
And no, I don't have a problem with the tackiness that is associated with the celebrations (like Sweet Potato Queens), nor the drinking. I think the problem there is that deep down everyone wants to be Irish Catholic, and they just don't know how to express it appropriately (calm, down....that was a joke. But I am serious about Shamrock Day, kinda. It's just dumb).
