It's Movie Time today, It's Movie Time today
My nephew Crispian has a nice long weekend for President's Day. While we spent the week throwing around GRAHND PLAHNS, like going to New York for the weekend, in the end our practical lives got in the way. Kate simply could not leave work.
After debating most of the morning (still in our PJ's of course) what we were going to, we settled on going to a movie (only after we had been settled on going to the museums-- again). Crispian begrudgingly said okay to Curious George because he thought it was a baby movie. (Don't worry---his mind changed, particularly when I told him that the voice of the Man in the Yellow Hat was Buddy from Elf).
When we got to Loew's at the Waterfront (not my first choice to see movies but they were showing Curious Geroge AND, I hate to say it, their Popcorn is better than some of the Independent theaters on my side of town), Myles was of course amazed. He's never been to a movie theater before, and I think going to the excessive and opulent Loew's set a pretty high bar for him. We bought our tickets, a bigantic popcorn, and Reese's Pieces, which Myles called M&M's. In the theater itself we found our seats. Myles sat on one side of me, Crispian the other. I was so proud of Myles. He didn't spill, he used his cupholder, and he didn't talk through the movie. Only half-way through he suddenly made the realization that "It's dark in here Mommy." I assured him that that was okay.
Crispian really enjoyed the movie, laughing much, and talking to his mom later enthusiastically about it. Myles laughed out loud a few times at some funny parts. Afterwards, he said his favorite part was when Curious George dumped paint in the bathtub, which surprised me because it wasn't a scene at which he specifically laughed. He also really liked that I didn't monitor his M&M intake, I would bet. He told Daddy on the phone that he ate lots of M&M's at the movie.
My favorite part? The soundtrack, of course, which we bought immediately afterwards at Barnes & Noble. I am quite fond of Jack Johnson, and this was awesome. During the movie, the songs are nicely placed. Sometimes in some of the kids' movies we've had to watch around here, they put a pop song in and it sounds forced, just layered into the movie track, and really has nothing to do with the movie except to enhance the chaotic moment. In Curious George the music is blended in and just lovely.
