Some more on Dongzhou
I was originally writing another post summarizing and picking at a SCMP.com article about some recent news coming out of Dongzhou, when the paper ran a late morning update, wiping out all the profound analysis I was going to provide you (ha-ha).
But I can summarize the main points. This was based on wire news from Agence France-Presse. Three villagers have officially been arrested in connection with the riots, and Xinhua has officially identified the three official fatalities of the police shooting (but not as of my time of writing this on their English-language website.) Local villagers still maintain that about 30 were killed when the police opened fire. The local officials have, as previously reported by the SCMP, detained a police commander believed to be the one who issued the order to shoot, but, "they did not identify him and indirectly absolved him of wrongdoing by saying troops were 'forced to' open fire when alarmed by villagers attacking them with explosives. "
This same article in its last paragraph reiterates the major point of contention between the villagers and the local government/developers: "Villagers complained the government refused to fairly compensate them for taking their land to build the plant, which they said would also threaten their earnings from fishing and gathering sea products. "
