Sanitize this

Via Open Book, a link to someone who has studied their own 1963 edition and their kids' 1991 edition of Richard Scarry's Best Storybook Ever. The differences are, uh, interesting. Having bought this book, one of Kate's and my favorites, for Crispian last year or so, I thought it felt different, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Some of the changes are appropriate--no more pretty stewardess, for instance. Some are just plain silly.
So I have to wonder, how one would sanitize this book ?
