Rethinking the whole Harry Potter-Satan connection

And whether it is appropriate viewing material in my house.
On Sunday, Myles was mostly a good boy in church. In fact since then he is back on to reminding me all day long he was a "good boy in church." I think he is trying to replace my actual memories with the revised memory of his being throughout the entire Mass a good boy."
As I said, he was MOSTLY a good boy. He kneeled for a minute even at the start of the Eucharistic prayers. During the first elevation, of the Host, Myles announced, "That is Jesus up there." While I was a little embarrassed he spoke at all, I must admit a growing pride that he recognizes that. But you know about pride, right, and the inevitable fall after that? For the second elevation, of the Chalice, he again announced, "That is Jesus up there" but then he added "and Harry Potter. Jesus and Harry Potter! Jesus and Harry Potter!" I quietly hissed something at him about Harry Potter having nothing to do with Jesus and Jesus doesn't like it when we talk about Harry Potter in His house. I think. I was sooooooooooo embarrassed I can barely remember what I said, but whatever it was, it caused Myles to chant, "I'm sorry, Jesus. Sorry Jesus. Sorry Jesus." I mean, was he expecting Jesus to come down off the cross, give him a hug and say, "That's okay," like one of his minorly injured playmates? I don't know, because a few times yesterday he started it up again, "I'm sorry, Jesus."
Myles will still be allowed to watch Harry Potter. Our movie nights with Crispian cause 'way too much excitement around here to stop. It just looks like I have so much work ahead of me to help Myles sort out the intangible facts of Jesus and the utterly tangible fantasy of Harry Potter.

Just thought you might like to know that this post has stuck with me for days and days. Every once in a while, I find myself picturing Myles kneeling there going, "Jesus and Harry Potter. Jesus and Harry Potter" with you kneeling there mortified trying to get him to stop. I don't mean to laugh at your trying moments of motherhood, but this story was darn funny!

It is funny. If it weren't me I would have been LMAO right there.
But this story is precisely why we probably won't be doing O Antiphons with you after lunch Saturday.

That is hilarious! It's great to see, however, that Myles' theology is better than alot of adults! ;-)

That's hilarious all right, and fortunately not quite as embarassing as what my little brother did during one Consecration some years back. Having found a toy truck in the "quiet room" of what was then my parish, he wandered into the main room just as the Host was being held aloft and proudly exclaimed "Look! A truck!"

Of course, back then, his "tr" didn't come out so well, and got cockney-fied into an "f"...

On that note, it's definitely heart-warming to see that yes, as Danny notes, your son has an appreciation for the divine mystery of the Eucharist that is lacking in many adult Catholics.

Once during the elevation of the host, I leaned over to my pre-school daughter and whispered "See that, it's Jesus", to which she replied as only a pre-schooler can "looks like a chip to me".

Don't know how old your son is - imagine pretty young....looks like he not only understands but can apply and has generalized the idea of hero/savior.....pretty darn good thinking....good job on you Mom, he's internalized who Jesus is...

Thank you all so much. I doubt that Myles is a theological wizard (ha-ha), but we really believe in sharing this faith with him. IT's just that good
