Dongzhou update
Minnie Chan in the SCMP.com is reporting that the commanding officer who gave the polics order to open fire (rumored to be a vice director of Shanwei Public Security Bureau) has been taken into custody because according to the Guangzhou daily, "The commanding officer on the scene mishandled the situation, causing accidental deaths and injuries. The Shanwei prosecutor decided to arrest him under the penal code."
Ms. Chan further explains that "Mainland police have strict rules governing the use of firearms and it was not clear if the officer had clearance from his superiors to open fire on protesting villagers."
This article also reiterates what you may have read from other sources as well, that the Dongzhou incident is believed to be the most violent suppression of protestors since Tiananmen Square. But this article also describes the protestors as having "fire-bombed" the power plant.
In another article by Minnie Chan titled "Villagers believe police sweep has begun," doesn't have much more new to report, other than the police continue to search the village for instigators and that there are villagers who say there are abuot 20 people missing from the protest. Still not clear if they are dead, in the hospital and in police custody, or just in police custody.
