Apparently there is such a thing as Good Communist Oppressive Religious Persecutor Regimes and Bad Communist Religious Persectuor Regimes
This post and this post are adjacent on Open Book. Bad news out of China (which you read here first), but a recent ordination of 57 priests in Viet Nam is hailed as a Sprintime in Viet Nam (?).
Both countries require registration of religions with the government, arresting anyone practicing or promoting an unrecognized religion. Both countries closely monitor the activities particularly of religious minorities (Christians). Both countries have a "Patriotic Catholic Chruch, though to distance themselves from appearing too much like China, the name in Viet Nam was changed to something like Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics. The VietNamese government even has a say in who the Pope appoints as their bishops. The government refused to accept Huynh Van Nghi as bishop of Hanoi. Five years later they accepted the current bishop, Cardinal Minh Man. VietNam arrests religious dissenters right before the US President visits.
But then again, we are witnessing a Springtime with the Good Commies.
