What is a Bowling Green?

So in my driving all over the Southeast and Midwest this past year, I have passed near or through several towns called Bowling Green. I have often wondered how many towns were called Bowling Green, and where the name originated.

Not only do they outline the source of the name (actually somewhat obvious), they also have a list of all the US cities that have this name. My favorite is without a doubt Bowling Green Kentucky, home of WKU (known in the Kentucky as simply Western) and the Corvette.
The point of the post is that I wonder---is there anything not in Wikipedia? It is my new IMDB.
