Another term for my growing Evangelical to English dictionary
While I was driving through Maryland or Virginia on my way to Raleigh on Friday, I was fiddling with the radio. With the news about Justice O'Connor, I was hoping to find NPR in the 80's and low 90's on the tuner. As would happen, I stumbled on some sort of Christian radio program. I caught only briefly the intro into some famous, pre-recorded explanation of the Gospel of John, and one of the terms that was being thrown around was "legalistic religions." The announcer was talking about people being converted from "legalistic religions" listening to these recordings to being Born-Again, and the word salvation and Living God were thrown around a lot, as something not available from "legalistic religions."
Okay, what does this mean? I am assuming Catholics are in there; are Lutherans and Anglicans, too? Any that have a Catechism or BCP that explains faith tenets? What is the origin of this term? Has it been around a long time?

In my Pentecostal days I reveled in these distinctions until I became honest with myself. The only reason I had the kind of faith in Christ that I had was that I was born a Catholic Christian and being Pentecostal was simply a reallocation of resources.
I'm driving across NC tomorrow morning--I may have more words and terminology to add :-)
