I am so fascinated by stories like this one about pockets of cultures that have been sealed off, far from where they came from. The Greek culture of the Kalash in Pakistan has until recently been relatively unchanged since 300 BC. Amazing, isn't it? When people migrate they either shore up their borders and preserve almost hermetically their language and culture or they get completely absorbed (or annhilated) by the dominant culture. It is like the Zorastrians on Madagascar, the community that gave us Freddy Mercury, that has preserved that part of Persia since the 700's, or to some extent, the Cajuns in Louisiana. When Randy was plant manager in Winona, he had a Cajun working for him. This guy's father didn't speak English until he went to school and his grandmother only spoke French. When we look at other immigrant cultures, like the Czechs in Texas or the Polish in Pittsburgh, all that remains is the food sometimes.
