Puritas Corbin responds to my every command

Okay, not really, but I got her to post about some of her favorite art in the U.S. I am glad she said something about sculpture, because I was thinking maybe I should volunteer that. There's a de Kooning bronze at the Carnegie Museum that I remember seeing for the first time when I was 17 that still I just love. It is similar to this one, but I can't find a picture of it on the Carnegie websites. I am also drawn to the Brancusis I've seen just about everywhere, and they are very much the opposite of the de Kooning.
Corbin explains her choices:

As you can see, I'm hopelessly representational in my tastes. I find most modern art interesting, but I don't really like it in a personal way. And the less representational it is, the harder it is for me to connect with it. I remember seeing Jackon Pollack paintings in New York. I knew I was supposed to be impressed, but I just felt like I wasn't getting it at all.

And this I understand where she is coming from. A lot of the abstract art that is celebrated and even used as a litmus test for how sophisticated your art tastes are can leave you wondering what you just saw. I can't get into art that feels like an exercise in skill. Anyone can have physical skill in creating art. Art needs to make you feel something, even nothing is something when you aer looking at a white canvas with one thin blue line going across it. Jackson Pollack, for me, is one of those artists I don't exactly get either. There's a lot to look at, and my brain tries to deconstruct all the layers and colors into some sort of categories. That activity keeps me from having any visceral response, and when I leave the company of a Pollack I somehow feel relieved, like I just narrowly escaped a room at a party where someone was talking my ear off. I get so much more out of Barnett Newman than I do Pollack.

I'd love for anyone else to volunteer their choices for favorite paintings in America. I tagged Corbin specifically because she has done some art posts before, and I want to make sure the chip I implanted in her head in college still works.

Chip, huh? That explains a LOT. :) Perhaps it was that chip that led me to utter the fateful phrase, "Okay, I'll be Hrothgar. You be Grendel's mother."
