Myles helps Mommy kick off Belgian Fest!
Tonight
after we left Randy at the airport, Myles and I went over to Kate's and Crispian's. It was close to dinner time, but since they were at the ball game earlier today, neither of them were much in the mood to eat out. I wasn't much in the mood to eat in.
Myles and I went over to Sharp Edge Beer Emporium for dinner. Every May they have their Belgian Fest at the East Liberty location. MMMmmmmMMMM. They already feature a lot of Belgian beers on Tap, so you could say every day is Belgian Fest. In May they also supplement their menu with some great Belgian bar food.
One of the things we ordered that I though Myles would like was a cheese plate. They served a pretty significant wedge of a semi-soft Belgian cheese that I think was soaked or aged in Chimay, crackmers, grapes, and apple slices. I figured I would eat most of the cheese, Myles the apples, and we would split the difference on the crackers and pick at the grapes. How wrong was I. First of all, never get set a big appetizer platter in front of a hungry toddler; they think it is all their meal. Fortunately for me, Myles is into sharing his food with Mommy. Somewhat unfortunately, this means he shoves food in my mouth he already licked. Myles sucked doen the grapes. He ate them all by himself--a huge bunch of them. He ate the crackers, but only the circle crackers. Yes, he know has favorite shapes, namely the circle and the oval. If anyone out there has read or heard that early preference of angle-less shapes is a sign of psychopathic behavior it would be best to keep those thoughts to yourself. Anyway, Myles kept wanting a cracker and when I would hand him one of the Club crackers he put it down and said, "Circle!!!!" Demanding child :-). I was slicing the cheese for us to share, and that worked well for both of us. Near the end of dinner we still had a pretty big chunk of cheese left that I wanted to take home so Kate could try some, and at those prices it would have been ridiculous to waste it. Myles had another idea. He was tired of eating little pieces so he swiped this hunk of cheese and started chomping down on it. Yeah, $15 pound Belgian cheese and he's going to town on it like it is free american cheese product (see picture above). Then, just in case the grapes and the smelly cheese he ate doesn't make today, ummm, interesting, I fed him roasted garlic off our pizza. Lots of roasted garlic.
And since it matters, I started with one of my all-time favorites, Hoegarten and then had a Bornem Trippel. Not too adventurous, not too much. I was with Myles, dontcha know.
