Happy Valentine's Day Babble and Rant

I don't do Valentine's Day. Some of you may have been on the receiving end of my annual Valentine rant, like how what was once a martyr's Feast Day has become a tacky excuse to buy edible underwear for someone you have only begun dating. Ugh. Okay, maybe I am too harsh and cynical, but I refuse to cooperate with any romantic observance of St. Valentine's Day. I am totally not looking forward to the crap Myles will have to endure at elementary school on Valentine's Day. I mean, I can do the Valentines themselves and the heart-shaped cookies, but all the pseudo-I-love-you garbage they pass off as party activities in schools make me gag.
But I actually had planned to do a blog entry today on something kinda sorta romantic, but the weather today prevented it. We have had all day that stuff described as Wintry Mix--it's like the plasma state of matter for snow. It is somewhere between rain and snow, you could call it wet snow, but it is freezing, and it definitely isn't rain. I thought today Myles and I might drive up to Jamestown, New York, to go to the Wegman's, have a little lunch, a big latte, and just get out of Kane for a few hours. But with this stuff falling from the sky, I thought it would have been impossible. Of course, when my Mom got home from work, I learned that it wasn't even raining in Sheffield, a town I would have to drive through to get to Jamestown. When my dad got home from work we watched the Erie news on TV and learned that Kane was the only town in the entire area that had this crummy weather. So I could have gone to Jamestown.
In Jamestown, in addition to walking around the mall and going to Wegman's, I was hoping to swing by the Lake View cemetery. I was already thinking about what a great blog entry for Valentine's Day, to go to the cemetery to see a local landmark legend and give you the oh-so romantic story. I was hoping somehow to write it is rapturous, breathy tones, like Olivia Hussy in Romeo and Juliet. One monument in this cemetery is called locally "The Lady in Glass." The story as I heard it was that she was a young woman on the way to her wedding that was killed in a horse-and-buggy accident. Her much bereaved fiance erected this above her grave and preserved her wedding dress in a glass case. There are other more fantastic stories, some of which include her walking at night, but this story as I heard it was pretty convincing. So I Googled the Lady in Glass to make sure I can find the cemetery, and I found a site that gives the real story. As it would turn out, there was no wedding, no buggy accident, no wedding dress. It was still a sad story, with the daughter of wealthy family dying young. They erected the statue, not a suitor, and the dress was just one they chose for no specific reason at all.
Since I didn't get a picture of it, you can find some here.
So Happy Valentine's Day. No mini road trip, no lady in glass, no romantic story. Just lots of some strange snow-like substance. No surprise really, since I am in Kane.
