Did I take the wrong turn at Breezewood and end up in Texas?
When I got back to Pittsburgh, I watched some news. There must have been no shootings in the East End or arsons in Connellsville on Monday because this was a big story on Channel 11 news tonight. ugh
I know there are so many more important things going on in the world, which is probably why this story was upsetting to me. This high school football coach, beloved by players and their parents, was terminated by the school board for unspecified reasons. There were high school football players on tv crying over this, but then again, maybe it is now the football thing to do to cry on tv. Anyway, the best anyone can guess is that the coach failed to reverse a thirty-ish year long streak of lackluster to losing seasons.
THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. What is going on here? I thought we wanted our kids to participate in sports to learn about doing their best, winning and losing with grace and dignity, teamwork, discipline, loyalty, and all that mom and apple pie stuff. It's not like Penn State or Notre Dame, where winning and losing and bowl games all mean money in the bank (or not) for the schools. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. With everything going on in the world, in this country, heck, in Westmoreland County, what message does this send the students and student-athletes? Did they think No Child Left Behind extends to sports, too?
Yes, there are so many things more worthy of outrage than this---which is again why it makes me so mad. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL.
Well, Hempfield Schools---that's Alyssa's problem anyway.

Don't you know you were the first person I thought of when I first heard about this movie. Like you are my own personal Texas translator :-)
