Before there were 6 million blogs there was the Utne Reader
Well, there still is the Utne Reader, and this collection of recent articles is interesting with respect to religion and politics. Check out in particular the Jim Wallis link (interesting to me right now since that the guy over at the Parish is going to be on Talk Radio tomorrow) and the very amusing "Perverted, God-Hating Frenchies vs. Inbred , Sex-obsessed, Yokels" that was on beliefnet.
You know, the beliefnet article is so good, I'm going to link to it directly. Once upon a time, when I was invited to write about "red state" stuff on another blog, I was hoping that the postings of all the invitees would be like this sort of Myth-buster thing. This turned out not to be the case, since they were just interested in "all conservative christian southerners are intolerant, ignorant, racist, sexist, Bible thumpers that need the Northern arm of the Democratic party to proseltyze to teach them tolerance." I mean, I have a LOT to say about how much Southern Living doesn't agree with me (ummm, in case you didn't know I am STILL in Pennsylvania...since Memorial Day), but if you ask me to write to your blog in the spirit of UNDERSTANDING what makes a red state tick, then I am going to try to address that, either analytically or anecdotally. I mean, I got totally bounced and deleted when I wrote in response to another poster saying that Republican policies breed hate and ignorance that Republican policies are not designed to breed hate or ignorance, but rather crafty conservative operatives will manipulate the hate, fear, and ingnorance that is out there to assure passage of the agenda. Was that so bad or untrue an observation? Anyway, that "Perverted, God-Hating Frenchies vs. Inbred , Sex-obsessed, Yokels" is SOOOOO good and the kind of thing I wish I were capable of writing.
