8th Grade Girls told Stripping is great career option
Yeah, you read THAT right. Check out the CNN article to see how badly one career day went at a middle school.
But you know, it wasn't like these 8th graders didn't know what an exotic dancer was. Not only is it used as backstory on some TV characters (like Marg Helgenberger's on CSI), it is everywhere. There isn't a cop show or movie made in the last 10 years that doesn't have some scene that takes place in a strip club, with strippers providing at least a backdrop. According to the CNN article, the students egged on the career counselor. As much as I don't like to talk about the pathological child (a serious post for another day) .....

But here's something you may not have noticed. I think the recruitment occurs long before 8th grade. I think it even happens on Nickelodeon.

Fried, 64, said he does not think he offended any of the students: "Eighth-grade kids are not dumb," he said. "They are pretty worldly."
The implication being, of course, that the parents (and the rest of us) are dumb for being appalled and offended by this. Not to mention the fact that the dolt can't seem to conceive of why many of us see it as a problem that kids already are that worldly by 8th grade.
The recruitment does occur long before 8th grade, of course. Try buying clothes for a 4-year-old girl that aren't minaturized knock-offs of the ones they're selling to the 16-year-olds. I really don't want to see 4-year-olds in belly tops and hip huggers, thank you. The sexualization of kids is all over this culture, but mostly we just shrug it off. Yet why is anyone suprised when the child sexual abuse rates climb?
I feel a rant building. I'd better shut up now.
