Oscar talk already
David Sterritt at Christian Science Monitor must have some spare time on his hands before he has to watch a slew of films that will be coming out in the next few weeks because he is already speculating about Oscar nominations.
He points out Sideways as having some very notable performances, particularly of actors I like. He notes Sandra Oh should get a best supporting actress nomination, which is cool because the first movie I saw her in she was playing a Chinese-Canadian actress trying to make it in Toronto. One of the best scenes of that movie is when she is reading for a walk-on part of a waitress in a TV movie. After her first reading, she is asked if she can do it with an accent. She then affects a French accent and asks them, "What kind of Akzent do you wahnt?" They are not amused, and she ends up playing the part in the TV movie with a very Chinese accent. So anyway, it would be cool for someone who had to make a movie about how hard it is to be a non-white actor on this continent get some recognition. I also liked that Sterritt thinks that Paul Giamatti was the best actor this year. I haven't seen Sideways yet, but I loved him in American Splendour. And how many actors have on their resumes a character called Pig Vomit? He should have gotten an Oscar just for that!
