Update from Grandma Ambrose, from Penang!!!
I hope if you are up late you have a chance to check out Grandma's ship's webcam. It is so cool. Not as cool as when she went around Tierra del Fuego or down the Amazon in 2002, but still pretty cool.
After departing Singapore on Sunday, we turned northwest to go thru the notorious Straits of Malacca to head for Port Pelang. the Strait connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, lying between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula and is the shortest sea route between India and China. Lots of cargo container ships passed. Arrived here at 6 am, toured a bit to the Batu Caves, an international hindo shrine - 272 steps to the top - , and the city of Port Pelang, which has twin towers made of airplane metal which will never rust and joined together at the 40th or so floors for stabilization. (There are other twin towers in the world.)We arrived at Penang at 7 am this morning after turning north and going thru the Malacca straits once again. We have to go to the city for our tours by Tender, small boats, since we cannot dock anywhere. Water is rough so we have a tugboat holding us steady.Will report later on today's tour, if computers are free tonight.
